what’s the “memory effect” of dell laptop battery? and how to clean out it?

Ni-cd batteries, and to a lesser extent Ni-MH batteries, suffer from what’s called the “memory effect”. What this means is that if a dell laptop battery is repeatedly only partially discharged before recharging, the dell laptop battery “forgets” that it has the capacity to further discharge all the way down. To illustrate: If you, on a regular basis, fully charge your dell laptop battery and then use only 50% of its capacity before the next recharge, eventually the dell laptop battery will become unaware of its extra 50% capacity which has remained unused. The dell laptop battery will remain functional, but only at 50% of its original capacity.

The way to avoid the dreaded “memory effect” is to fully cycle (fully charge and then fully discharge) the dell laptop battery at least once every two to three weeks. Batteries can be discharged by unplugging the device’s AC adapter and letting the device run on the dell laptop battery until it ceases to function. This will insure your dell laptop battery remains healthy.

Dell Laptop Battery Maintenance and User Instructions
1) A new dell laptop battery pack needs to be circled (fully discharged and recharged) three to five times to reach its optimum performance.
2) To maintain the optimum performance of a battery pack, it is highly recommended to circle (fully discharging and recharging) it at least once a month.
3) Rechargeable dell laptop battery will undergo self-discharging when left unused for a long period of time. Thus, it should always be stored in a fully charged state and kept in a cool, dry and clean place.
4) A new dell battery usually maintains a discharged condition with very low capacity. It is highly recommended to fully charge new battery packs before using. You can refer to the users’ guide of your electronic device for charging instructions.
5) It is normal if a new dell laptop battery gets warm when being charged or used. However, please pay special attention if the battery pack becomes excessively hot. This may indicate there is a problem with the charging circuit of the electronic device. Please consult a qualified technician if necessary.
6) New dell laptop batteries are hard to be charged. Sometimes, your electronic device may indicate a fully charged condition about 10 to 15 minutes when the new battery pack is being charged for the first time. When this happens, remove the battery pack and let it cool down for about 10 to 15 minutes then repeat the charging procedure. Sometimes, a new battery will suddenly refuse to be charged. If this happens, a suggested solution is trying to remove the battery from the device and insert it again.

Lithium Dell Laptop batteries Tips

Lithium Dell Laptop batteries Tips
We often set our sights on price, weight, figure and configuration when we purchase a new laptop.Battery is often ignored. In fact, battery and integral performance of a laptop are inseparable.Battery is as important as CPU, mainboard, hard disk etc.  We list the tips and guideline below.Let’s get the most of your lithium Dell Laptop batteries.
A. Materials
Batteries in laptops and notebooks are principally made using either Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) or Lithium Ion (Li-ion) technologies. Each type of rechargeable battery technology has its own unique characteristics: Ni-Cd is the earliest battery used in laptop. It has many defects because at the time there wasn’t enough technology. It is bulky, heavy. It also has low capacity, short life and memory effect. But now we often use Ni-MH
and Li-ion battery. Lithium battery has its strong suit such as small in size, light weight, high capacity, low memory effect, short charge time etc.” People has the wrong concept that Lithium batteries do not have memory effect because they are misled by irresponsible commericals.Lithium batteries also have memory effect though it is low and inobvious. There are two kinds of lithium battery: li-battery and li-ion battery.
What’s different between these two lithium batteries and How to distinguish them?
Li-battery had existed long time before. It is not safe enough and often burns and bursts. Then people have improved and developed li-ion battery. This technology controlled activity of lithium element and made lithium battery to be more safe, efficient and convenient. As a result Li-battery was withdrawn from the market. The way to distinguish them is to recognize from the marking. Lithium battery used in laptops and mobile phones at present is actually Li-ion battery.
What’s Ni-MH battery?
Ni-MH battery is the most environmentally friendly battery. The country that attaches importance to environment often uses this kind of battery because it is easy to recall and reuse. But Ni-MH battery has its downsides compared with Li-ion battery such as long charging time, heaviness, low capacity and memory effect. Although it suffers less from memory effect than Ni-Cd battery, it needs to be completely discharged before being charged, not only for
laptop battery, but also for mobile phone battery.Lithium-ion battery also has its own imperfections like high cost and less discharge/charge cycles. A Lithium-ion battery provides 400-600 discharge/charge cycles, 800 cycles by special improvement. Based on the calculation that  the battery is charged once per day, the best lithium battery can end up its life after around over 2 years. While a Ni-MH battery provides more than 700 discharge/charge cycles, high quality Ni-MH can even provides 1200 cycles. With this comparison, Ni-MH battery’s life is longer than lithium-ion battery. Therefore, we can say there are no perfect Dell Laptop batteries at present.
B. Production Origin
At the very beginning, Laptop battery mainly comes from Japan, Korea, Chinese mainland and Taiwan. Japan is the main place because most of laptop cells are produced by Japanese manufacturers such as Toshiba, Panasonic, Sanyo, NEC etc. Although there are many brands of laptop and many kinds of batteries, cells are from these Japanese brands. Manufacturing the cells has created a lot of profits for Japanese electronic companies. Most Chinese mainland and
Taiwan’s manufacturers produce with materials supplied by clients. And the cells used are made in Japan.
C. Weight, Figure and Capacity
Most of Dell Laptop batteries are quadrate. Only a small number of them for super-slim laptops are columniform. The weight of battery is dependent upon its material and the laptop the battery is used for. A NiMH battery that has the same capacity and figure with a Lithium battery will weigh twice the lithium battery. The capacity is measured by mAh which has a direct relationship with battery run-time. Besides, the run-time is also heavily dependent upon the power
saving technology of the equipment. When selecting a laptop, it is advisable to consider what warranties the manufacturers can offer for the battery.
1. How to charge your new replacement dell laptop battery properly?
Some laptops with lithium-ion batteries use technology of SBS brightness battery system, which can measure battery’s life accurately. Although lithium-ion battery has many merits, we still need to master some professional charge method to prolong battery’s life and made it maintain long time power supply.Your new laptop battery requires three complete charge/discharge cycles before use and achieving maximum capacity. It means the battery would have to be charged fully and then be discharged fully. Repeat it three times before starting to use the battery. By this way, battery’s internal chemical materials can be activated and its internal chemical reaction can come into the optimal state.
After the activation, the battery can be charged and used freely. But the battery will have to be discharged completely once a month so that the battery activity can be released by such deep discharge and battery life can be maintained. If battery is idle for over 3 months, it is also necessary to conduct 3 cycles of complete charge and dsicharge to ensure that the battery is activated. You must control the charge time commendably when you use a Ni-MH battery. Please remember not to overcharge continually, or it will shorten the battery’s life. Furthermore, Ni-MH battery should be fully discharged before being charged. It also needs three complete discharge/ charge cycles before starting to use it.
Most users are used to using Alternating Current instead of a battery for power supply when they use laptops. Actually the battery needs to be used at least once or twice per month to release the battery power completely. Then fully charge the battery with AC power once. Please remember that it is always good for rechargeable batteries to use up the battery power before giving them a full charge. Because the li-ion battery used by laptop has its own laziness and would lose its activeness when being idle for long time. It needs to be reactivated. It is suggested to take out the battery from laptop when it uses AC power supply indoor to avoid having the battery get charged frequently. It is also suggested to shut down the laptop so that battery can be fully charged. Do not remove the AC power during charge. In addition, the power of battery can easily be used up and most laptops have only one battery. For this reason, some manufacturers have developed a fast charge feature that enables the battery to replenish its power at the fastest pace after power draining up. One hour charge can give the battery back over 90% of its power. Why is not 100%? Because frequent fast 100% charge will greatly shorten the battery life. In order to prolong battery life, fast charge will have to be switched to slow charge(namely Constant Voltage charging method) when battery reaches 90% charge.
For a common laptop, the best charge method is to turn off the laptop when its battery is being charged. The charge time will be shortened by 30% by this method.
2. Dell Laptop Battery Maintenance
1) Remove unused PCMCIA Cards from your notebook to extend battery run-time when no external power source is connected.
2) Battery works the best in a condition of 20-30℃ temperature. It may shorten battery’s run time if heightening or lowering the temperature.
3) It is a wrong concept that taking out the battery from laptop when it has stable power supply in order to prolong the battery life.Because when battery is fully charged, its charging circuit will close automatically. Overcharge usually will not happen.
4) It is recommended to conduct a complete charge and discarge cycle for the battery every three months on average.
5) Don’t use battery if it is not necessary because every charge/discharge time may shorten battery’s life.
6) Try not to charge battery before power is used up and not to charge the battery too long. This is the best way to avoid memory effect for both Lithuim and Ni-MH batteries. Lithium-ion battery has memory effect too though it is not as obvious as Ni-MH battery.
3. Battery Usage Tips
1) Don’t let liquid immerge into battery. Once liquid gets into battery, stop using the battery. Use a piece of cloth to wipe it up and trasnfer it to places with good ventalation for dry-up. Or it will cause danger.
2) Don’t try to open or assemble battery (except you are an expert). Because there are many circuits in it, rough work may destroy the circuits.
3) Avoid exposing the battery to extreme heat and cold, moisture or water, chemistry liquid. Don’t let it in contact with metal.
4) When having the lapto ly on surfaces of such soft objects as bed, sofa, carpet, remember not to weaken the laptop’s ability to release heat.
5) when charging, shutting down the computer will yield better results. But it is not mandatory. It will be good for the battery if it is not used until 30 minutes after charging.
6) If battery is used to supply power, it is advised to use up the power before recharging.
7) It is normal for the battery to get warm when it is in use because battery produces heat the process of charging or discharging converts its energy.Besides, notebook will also transfer some heat to battery when it is operating. If it is getting too hot, there may be a problem with the device and qualified personnel should check it.
4. Questions about Laptop Battery
1) How to remedy the battery that has gone wrong?
If the battery has already had problems like the run time obviously being shortened and serious memory effect, how can we remedy it? Try below methods: Firstly, enter into BIOS and shut the electrical power manager. Because many laptops have electricity saving mode, over-low voltage may lead to laptop shutting down automatically. Then turn on the laptop again. Press PAUSE before getting into WINDOWS. Let it stay in WINDOWS menu until electric power
getting used-up which will cause the laptop to shut down. Repeat this process three times before recharging it. The above method is usually very effective. If your battery does not change even with above method, then there is nothing can be done.
2) Why there is no need for us to remove the battery when we use external electrical power?
There is chip on the main board to prevent overcharge. When it has been charged up to 100%, charging control chip(PET) will stop the charging.Don’t worry about any damage to the battery.
3) How to store battery when it is not in use for a long time? It should be fully charged or discharged?
Storing the batteries at full discharge for long period of time will have the battery cells lose their activity, even have the control circuit protection self-closed which resulted in its inability to be re-used. Storing the batteries at full charge will have battery safety jeopardized. The best way to store the batteries is to keep the batteries at cool and dry places at optimal temperature of about 20 degrees with only about 50% capacity remained. Off course, getting
the battery out every month for use is the best way to keep the battery at excellent storage state and battery power free from flowing away completely which could damage the battery.
4) How shall we prolong the laptop battery run-time?
A、Turn down the screen brightness of your dell laptop.
B、Make good use of the stand-by, dormancy function etc. If it not in use for a long time, stand-by or dormancy no only saves electric power but also prolongs laptop life.
C.When battery is in use, try to shut down wirelessness, blueteeth and infrared port.In the meantime, try to remove the unneccessary external devices and avoid turning on large 3D programs and games so as to cut down on unneccessary power consumption.
5) How can you use your new battery?
Your new battery must be completely charged and discharged before use. The long period of transition from factory to customers during which the idleness of battery may passivate its electrode material. So upon initial use the battery may require three complete charge/discharge cycles in order to avoid passivation and activate the battery’s performance and maximize it’s capacity. Meanwhile, As there is the data transmission agreement port between laptop battery and laptop, it takes 2-3 charge and discharge cycles before the battery’s actual capacity percentage is in sync with the percentage displayed by laptop. Cycling approach: Put the battery into laptop and charge/discharge it until the laptop shutting down. Then charge the battery again. Charge time must exceed 12 hours. Repeat three times.
6) Do you need to remove the battery when you use external power ?
It is actually dependant on whether you need to use the external power for charging your battery. Battery’s charge cyles have a direct relationship with its life. Usually there are only 500 cycles of discharge and dicharge for the battery. Every time, we charge the battery, the number of chargeable cycles is reduced by one. However, currently a lot of notebook manufactuers have taken the battery’s vulnerability into consideration by improving the battery protection technology so that the battery will not get charged if it does not meet certain conditions. Even though, it is advsiable to remove the battery when exeternal power is in place for long time because high temperature is always not good for battery. Laptop can release a certain amout of heat when in operation, thus will cause damage to battery.
7) Shall we fully use up the power of battery before recharging it?
For people who use li-ion batteries, the biggest merit is nearly no memory effect. It is thus not necessary to wait until power is completely used up before recharging. As for Ni-MH and Ni-CD batteries, it is better to recharge when no
power is left, especially for Ni-CD batteries whose memory effect is very obvious. Therefore, we suggest for all users, especially for laptop users,  to preodically use up the battery power before recharging the battery.
8) Why does a rechargeable battery’s life get short when charge cycles get less?
All rechargeable batteries are made with chemical materials. The chemistry changes to electric power. Simply speaking, the reaction is reversible. it can be charged and discharged. But these chemical materials would not keep its chemical nature forever. Along with charge and discharge, the battery’s chemical material reaction will be aging and deteriorating which lead to decline of workable capacity. Then the using time is also declined gradually. Chemical material will completely deteriorate and the battery can not be used when charge and discharge cycles are up to a certain extent.
9、Our battery have no power soon after it is fully charged?
Usually, there are two reasons as follows:
A、Battery’s life is to the end ( We have to change another dell laptop battery if it is true. ) Battery is an expendable product. Lithium-ion battery has about 500 charge/discharge
cycles. Its performance will get worse and worse after charge/discharge cycles exceed 500. Then we have to change battery.
B、The battery is not used properly. a, Battery is placed under high temperature. b, Metal end of battery group is short circuited after removing the
battery. c, AC to DC Adapter’s quality is not good, thus unable to supply stable voltage and made the power manager in confusion.
